Palmerton Council: No more coin tosses

From this point forward, coin toss fundraisers are prohibited along all streets in Palmerton.

The notification was given during a meeting of borough council on Thursday, and comes one month after council voiced reservations over the activity. In a brief statement, council President Terry Costenbader referred to the regulations as listed under the Vehicles Law of Pennsylvania. The regulations state that no person shall stand on a roadway for the purpose of soliciting a ride, or stand on a roadway for the purpose of soliciting employment, business or contributions from the occupant of any vehicle."So, that's going to be enforced in the borough," Costenbader said. "There's not going to be (anymore)."No other discussion was held on the matter. After the meeting, Costenbader said, "I can't tell you how many people have come up to me and thanked me for addressing that problem."While coin tosses are no longer allowable on borough streets, borough Manager Rodger Danielson said after the meeting it shouldn't prevent organizations from holding fundraisers through other means."I'm sure they'll find other ways to do fundraising," Danielson said. "It has become more and more prevalent lately, and I think that's what brought it to the surface was the frequency of it."At last month's meeting, Costenbader said he believed the matter was becoming almost a weekly routine, had become annoying to some citizens and was dangerous.Councilman Kris Hoffner said at that time the fire company has been conducting coin tosses for years, and would be hesitant to tell them they should discontinue the practice because they provide a service to the community. In other business, council, by a 6-0 vote, with Councilman Richard Nothstein absent:• Announced that a bid opening for the borough hall's heating system at 443 Delaware Ave. will be held at 2 p.m. Aug. 25.• Accepted the resignation of Dennis Behler as the borough's emergency management coordinator. Council then agreed it would look for a replacement and send Behler a letter of thanks for his service to the borough in that capacity.• Approved a request from the Living Hope Lighthouse Church in Palmerton to hold a bicycle safety course from 1-3 p.m. on Aug. 16 in the borough park.
