NV ousted after another one-run loss

FULLERTON - Half of the Northern Valley's 10 regular season losses came in one-run games.

The Chargers season ended Saturday with another one-run loss, this time at the hands of Fullerton, 2-1 at Harry Glasser Field to oust Northern Valley from the Lehigh Valley Legion playoff tournament."That's been our year," said Northern Valley head coach Brad Rauch. "We could be a 12- or 13-win team with all the one-run losses we have."Fullerton's Dakota Schiffer pitched all seven innings for the Ramblers, giving up just four hits while walking none. After allowing a game-tying run on back-to-back singles in the fifth inning, Schiffer retired the game's last seven batters in order."Dakota hits his spots," said Fullerton head coach Daniel Delp. "He has four pitches he throws. He gets a lot of ground balls and broken bats. He didn't throw his knuckle ball at all today. He pitched against these guys earlier in the season and threw a one-hitter against them."Northern Valley also had solid pitching. Josh Williamson allowed six hits over six innings. Only one of the Rambler's two runs were earned. The Charger defense got Williamson out of jams with inning-ending double plays in the second, third and fifth innings.Fullerton opened the scoring with a run in the fourth inning.Northern Valley answered in the top of the fifth when Taylor Breininger hit a two-out single, stole second and scored on Travis Nelmes' single to tie the game at 1-1.Fullerton had two on with one out in the fifth, but a line-drive to Williamson resulted in an unassisted double play. The Ramblers went right back to work in the sixth. James Scheuren led off with a single and went to second on a sacrifice bunt. An intentional walk to Matt Melosky and a seven-pitch walk to Jeffrey Charles loaded the bases.Nick Delp got the game-winning hit when he took a 3-2 pitch to right field to bring in Scheuren and make it 2-1."Nick came through," said Daniel Delp. "He hits the ball, but he hits the ball at people all the time. It was good to see him get the big hit."Northern Valley went 8-10 in the regular season to earn the No. 6 seed in the tournament. The Chargers knocked off No. 3 Coplay in the first round then lost to top-seeded North Parkland and Fullerton."The last game, saying good-bye to players you've had for a long time is always hard," said Rauch. "Some of these guys were here with me on my first legion team. Northern Valley has been one of the top team in the Lehigh Valley Legion for the last four years. It's not because of the coaches. It's because of these guys and their determination. I can't be more proud of the guys we have."Northern Vy. 000 010 0 - 1 4 2Fullerton 000 101 x - 2 6 1Williamson and Breidinger; Schiffer and Delp.
