Coaldale considers festival

The winter? Long. The turmoil over whether or not to restore the borough's police force? Over. The budget? Stretched to the limit.

What Coaldale residents need most now is an event to anticipate, something to unite them in its planning and hosting, Mayor Richard Kellner said during a council meeting Tuesday."I think we should make plans to have a Coaldale Community Festival in 2015," Kellner said. "We can have games, a band, possibly over Memorial Day next year."Council members were very supportive of the idea, and chipped in with their suggestions. After a discussion, council voted to hold a meeting at 6:30 p.m. July 15 at borough hall, inviting anyone from the community or representing community organizations who are interested in helping plan the festival.Councilman Harry Hontz, who chairs the police committee, said officers responded to 247 calls in June, which included five accident investigations and nine criminal arrests. In other business, council members:Tabled taking action on a bid for road materials, although there was only one bidder, Lehigh Asphalt. They decided to have their road foreman review the bid before they take action on it during next week's meeting.Voted to sell a vacant lot at 255 W. High St. The building at that address was demolished last year. The lot will be offered for sale by sealed bid, with council reserving the right to reject all bids.
