Letter to the editor: Hidden costs

To the Editor:

Some technocrats among us are on a mission to connect every living and nonliving thing on our planet to the Internet, so that everything can be tracked and monitored indefinitely, which according to the technocrats will make the world a better place. This has been dubbed the Internet of Things (IoT), and it is already a reality in many places.

Some people are uncomfortable with the ubiquitous monitoring of “smart” devices in our homes, cars and public spaces, while others seem to enjoy it. Either way, the day is fast approaching when we will no longer have a choice in the matter.

Our region is on board with the plan, and Penn Forest Township hopes to establish an internet connection at the township park for the purpose of installing surveillance cameras in the park. Cameras can be a useful tool in preventing vandalism, but there is a price to be paid for the round-the-clock security and surveillance that is impacting our society. For residents who plan to visit the township park in the near future, don’t forget to smile, because you will be on camera, and somebody will be watching.
