Northern Lehigh High School establishes its own Leo Club

Northern Lehigh High School has established its very own Leo Club.

Eight students were recently inducted into the school's brand new organization during a ceremony conducted by members of the Slatedale-Emerald Area Lions Club.The students are seniors Thomas Quigley and Caitlin McCormick, juniors Kianna Marlatt, Amber Thomas and Emily Bevans, and freshmen Ashton Bevans, Everette Bevans and Wyatt Delans.Recognized as the world's largest service club organization, the Leo Club enables students to develop and contribute individually and collectively as responsible members of the community.Fred Folland, 1st VDG, Slatedale-Emerald Lions Club, who also serves as Leo adviser, said the Leo Club was open to any student who wished to join."These kids want to serve their community, and serve the less fortunate," Folland said. "They're going to be sponsoring the Relay For Life of Upper Lehigh County; that's a huge project to undertake."Relay For LifeHigh school Principal Robert Vlasaty explained to the students the significance of their involvement in Relay, and urged them to recruit a team from each of the school's activities to walk in the event.The American Cancer Society's Relay For Life of Upper Lehigh County will be held at Northern Lehigh High School's Bulldog Community Stadium, 1 Bulldog Lane, Slatington, from 4 p.m. May 16 through 4 p.m. May 17.The relay is a 24-hour community event which raises awareness and funds for the cancer society to support research and provide free programs and services to cancer survivors. It will consist of a Survivors Lap, Luminaria Ceremony and Fight Back Ceremony.The event is an organized, overnight community fundraising walk whereby teams of people camp out around a track while members of each team take turns walking around the track. It also features food, games and activities to provide entertainment and build camaraderie as part of a family-friendly environment for the entire community.Relay For Life is designed to involve the community in cancer education, increase awareness of the mission of the American Cancer Society and its advocacy efforts, and to learn about programs and services available to cancer patients, their caregivers and families.For more information, or to register for Relay, visit
