Northern Lehigh superintendent discusses funding

Northern Lehigh Superintendent Michael Michaels discussed exactly how Governor Tom Corbett's 2014-15 budget proposal would affect the district at the school board meeting this week.

Michaels said that both the district's basic education funding, as well as special education funding, would remain level.On a positive note, Michaels said that as part of the proposed Ready to Learn block grant, the district could see an additional $271,000 over last year's figure.However, Michaels noted that's contingent on, "If sufficient funds are available to be distributed.""It really sounds great about the new grant," Michaels said. "However, I would have liked to see us get more in special ed."Update on high school gym roofThe board heard a report on the status of the high school gymnasium roof, which last month sprung a leak during a high school boys' basketball game.Greg Derr, director of support services and transportation, said that five of the mechanical screen posts were removed and sealed, and that there have been no further leaks.But, Derr said that another spot created a problem close to one of the mechanical screen posts, which was tarred over and sealed. A serviceman from Tremco was on site and made the repair, he said.When the weather permits, the area will be overlaid.National SchoolCounselors WeekThough it was actually a week earlier, Michaels recognized the week of Feb. 3-7 as National School Counselors Week."We have a great group of counselors, who are hard working, and they do a good job," he said. "Everything is working well with our guidance counselors."Michaels specifically lauded instructor Sue Mengel for her work with the School Wide Positive Behavior Support Program that will be implemented districtwide.Law Firm DonationMichaels commended the law firm of Steckel & Stopp for their recent donation to the district.Among the items donated were six desktop computers, one laser jet printer, two 15-inch monitors, and one 17-inch monitor.Michaels specifically thanked board solicitor Charles W. Stopp.In turn, Stopp told Michaels he was glad to be of help to the district.Board businessIn other business, the board approved a resolution regarding the 2014-15 Lehigh Carbon Community College sponsor contribution budget. Total expenditures equal $6,186,337, which represents a 4.7-percent decrease of $303,820 over the 2013-14 budget. Northern Lehigh's share of the total budget is $224,235, a 6.4-percent decrease of $15,214.Board businessIn other business, the board:• Accepted the resignation of Dima Hanna from her position as cook's helper, effective Dec. 31, 2013. Hanna will remain on the substitute lists.• Approved the administrative transfer of Elizabeth Trantham from middle school PCA to high school emotional support aide, replacing Ellen Kiss, who resigned, at no change in salary, effective upon receipt of replacement clearances.• Appointed Nicholas Bachman as middle school PCA, replacing Trantham, at a salary of $11.40 per hour Monday through Friday, from 9:45 a.m. to 2:15 p.m. up to 180 student days a school year, plus additional 20 hours for staff development, according to language in MOU, effective upon the receipt of clearances. There will be a 60-day probationary period.• Appointed Jamie Kuhns from part-time high school cook's helper, to full-time high school cook's helper, at no change in salary.• Approved substitute teacher Melissa Frederickson, Art K-12, for the 2013-14 school year at the 2013-14 substitute teacher rates as approved on the Supplementary Personnel Salary Schedule, pending verification of missing personnel file items.• Approved Rachel Reiter as helping teacher in the Northern Lehigh School District for inductee Steven Jonkman in the 2013-14 school year, at a stipend of $750.• Appointed Director Mathias Green as Lehigh Carbon Community College Board of Trustees Representative for the term July 1, 2014 through June 30, 2020.
