Annual Truskey run held Saturday

The Annual Truskey Run was help Saturday in Tuscarora State park.

The run is organized by Wayne and Pat Truskey of West Penn Township. Their son, Chris, who often trained at Tuscarora, passed away as the result of a car crash in September 1990.

Family friend Wendy Dunkelberger of Tamaqua worked with the Truskeys to organize an annual race to honor Chris's memory. The first was held in August 1991. They established a scholarship fund to help high school runners further their educations. So far, about $65,000 has been distributed.

In 2002, Chris's younger brother Kevin also died as a result of a car crash. He'd won the Schuylkill League Championship, which was held on the Tuscarora Park Course.

Since then, the race has become known as the Chris and Kevin Truskey Memorial Run. Scholarships are given to the first place Tamaqua High School boy and girl, the top male and female finisher from Schuylkill League teams, and to the top high school finishers from out of the area.

The races included a 5K run, a 10K run and a 5K walk.
