Five Franklin Twp. workers join union

Five Franklin Township workers are now members of the Teamsters union.

Franklin Township supervisors approved a motion on Tuesday night to ratify the contract between the township and the workers.Township worker Glenn Williams said it took about six months of negotiations to reach this goal."We aren't looking to make any changes in the way we are paid or looking for additionalhours," Williams Glenn Williams. "We just want to continue as we are. We're doing it for job security."In October 2013, two or three Franklin Township sanitation workers feared losing their jobs when supervisors discussed the possibility of having outside collection services pick up residents' solid waste.Supervisors had discussed selling off its garbage trucks, including a 2010 Freightliner purchased in 2009 at a cost of $179,196.An outcry by township residents saved their jobs. Residents said they wanted local haulers because they had better service.The township has had mandatory collection since 1986.Williams said workers are not looking for big money."We want to have what we have," he said. "Maybe there will be raises along the way, but that is not our goal."Williams said being in the Teamsters union helps workers with contract negotiations.Township residents pay $225 a year for service, while seasonal and senior citizens pay a discount of $160 a year.
