Coaldale appoints new council member

Coaldale has a new council member.

During a special meeting Wednesday, the council appointed Yvonne Stoffey. Stoffey, a Coaldale native and Panther Valley High School graduate, was a unanimous appointment.Councilman Thomas Keerans made the motion to appoint Stoffey, which was seconded by Mike Doerr. Five council members, President Angela Krapf, Keerans, Doerr, Linda Miller and Brenda Hosler, voted in favor of the appointment. Councilman Harry Hontz was working and unable to attend.With Mayor Richard Kellney also working and solicitor Mike Greek unable to attend, Stoffey could not be sworn in at the meeting. She will be sworn in between 6:30 and 6:45 p.m. Thursday at the borough building, council members said.Stoffey was one of four applicants for the council seat left vacant due to the passing of Steve Tentylo, who died July 10. Tentylo had served since Jan. 14, 2002; Stoffey will serve the remainder of his current term, which runs to Dec. 31, 2015.The other three applicants were former councilman Richard Marek, Kelly Dirzulaitis and Vincent Miller Sr. Krapf said that Stoffey was the best choice for the position."She's a member of various nonprofit organizations, volunteers and is very active in the community," Krapf said. "I've worked with her in various organizations and admire her drive and passion. I know she will have Coaldale's best interests in mind."
