West Penn Township supers review zoning

It goes without saying. We humans have a lot of stuff, and lots of it doesn't belong in our houses. Before man caves, we had……the garage.

But what if you've outgrown your 1,400-foot rancher and you want to build a big garage, 20 x 40, or 800-square feet?According to an existing ordinance in West Penn, you can't do it, at least, not without getting a variance from the zoning hearing board.According to the ordinance, an "accessory structure" such as a garage can't be more than 50 percent of the size of the home, or principal structure.During a meeting Tuesday, the supervisors discussed changing certain elements of the existing ordinance."We're going to review the ordinance and see if we can change things," said Chairman Jim Akins. "We're a very rural township and people often need a large accessory building."The supervisors also reviewed draft copies of a new Comprehensive Plan, which was developed by Alfred Benesch & Co. of Pottsville. The board will schedule a public hearing on the plan in October, and Akins said they hope to be ready to adopt the new plan by Jan. 1.In other actions, the board reviewed the Community Development Block Grant project list.Heading the list is the addition of a handicapped access ramp on the east side of the township building, to meet ADA requirements.
