Area couple celebrates 70 years

Eugene Tokosh and Florence (Pancheri) Tokosh will celebrate their 70th wedding anniversary on Aug. 5.

They met at a movie theater in 1941. Eugene "caught Florence's eye" and he asked her if he could sit beside her. When he noticed Florence, he said to his brother Paul "I'm going to marry that girl."At the time Florence was 17 years old and Eugene was 20. They dated for three years and were married in Sandwich, Massachusetts, while Eugene was serving in the Navy during World War II.He served on the USS Sarita, an attack cargo transport, in the Pacific Ocean.At the time, Florence was in nurse's training at Philadelphia General Hospital. After the war, they purchased a house on West Kline Avenue in Lansford.They raised four children, Howard Tokosh, Jean Tokosh Ward, Ann Tokosh Derlunas and David Tokosh, who died in 2008.They have seven grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. Their 10th great-grandchild is due to be born on the day of their anniversary.Eugene enjoys hunting, fishing, attending baseball games and restoring furniture. He is retired from the Atlas Powder Company.Florence enjoys reading, playing bingo, visiting the casino and dining out. She was a cook, for 25 years, for the sisters at Saint Mary's Convent in Coaldale.On their 68th anniversary, Florence and Eugene renewed their wedding vows at Saint Francs of Assisi church in Nesquehoning.Florence and Eugene now reside at Maple Shade Meadows in Nesquehoning. A family get-together is planned to celebrate the 70th anniversary event.
