Chestnuthill Township hires assistant roadmaster

Dave Scheller, an employee of the Chestnuthill Township road crew, was appointed the new assistant roadmaster for the township at the Tuesday Chestnuthill Township supervisors' meeting.

The township received 28 applications for the position. All were interviewed and went through background checks.Supervisor Harry Miller made a motion to advertise for road crew positions to create a list of candidates for possible future openings. It was approved, 3-0. The current roadmaster, Merton Whitney, plans to retire in September.David Albright, Chestnuthill Township manager, said that anyone who had already submitted an application for the assistant roadmaster position may apply for a road crew position.Supervisor Chris Eckert said the Chestnuthill Township Historical Society is looking into holding a Community Day on the same date as the Dave Fleetwood Memorial Run/Walk fundraiser, Sunday, Sept. 21, at the West End Regional Park.In a report from Eric Hoffman, acting Chestnuthill Township Emergency Management coordinator, West End Fire Company responded to 38 calls in March, and the West End Ambulance Association responded to 137 calls in March. The Pennsylvania State Police responded to 294 calls, which included 37 false alarms, 21 crashes, 21 thefts, eight burglaries, seven firearms issues and six DUIs.The board approved, 3-0, advertising for a seasonal and part-time grounds and maintenance assistant to Adam Thieling in the $10 to $12 an hour range, which has already been budgeted.The board approved 2-0 the Josephine LaBarr and Russell and Denise Gould lot line adjustment. Supervisor Chairman Chuck Gould abstained due to being a relative.Bernie Kozen, executive director of the West End Park and Open Space Commission, said that the 1/2 mile paved trail at Chestnuthill Park is in bad repair, and before it is lost all together, he wants to see repairs made. The cost will be $57,000, which will include the cost of engineering, the bid process and the material. He is applying for a DCNR grant. The board voted to match the monies received from the grant with monies from the township's Park and Recreation Fund.Kozen reported:• $563 profit was made at last month's bingo.• Zumba and ripped classes are held Tuesdays and Thursdays at the Chestnuthill Township Park building.• A CPR/First Aid training class will be held from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at the park building.• An Easter Egg Hunt will be held at 1 p.m., Saturday, April 12 at the Ross Township Van Buskirk-Haney Park in Saylorsburg. There will be 5,000 eggs hidden.• Give and Take Day is 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, April 26, at the Chestnuthill Township Park.• Fly fishing permits on the McMichaels with the Pohoqualine Fish Association are available.• Work on Dave Fleetwood's Memorial Trail at the West End Regional Park was awarded to E.F. Possinger. The money for the project was obtained through a grant from Marcellus shale funds.
