West Penn Act 537 plans finally okayed

Following over a decade of talks and negotiations, West Penn Township board of supervisors have authorized resolution number nine; ratifying the adoption of Act 537 and its submittal to DEP (Department of Environmental Protection).

The decision, announced during the township's public meeting, was made following numerous months of planning and joint meetings with Walker Township Supervisors and committee members. Supervisors added that it could take up to 90 days for it to be approved by DEP.A variety of other topics were discussed during the public meeting.• A motion was made to advertise to adopt an ordinance of the township requiring the installation of building numbers. The decision will be accounted during the November meeting.• Supervisors also agreed to review West Penn Township's Floodplain Ordinance during the next meeting and the possibility of advertising to adopt it in December. Solicitor Gretchen Sterns said there weren't major changes to the ordinance.• West Penn Police Chief Brian Johnson gave statistics regarding his department's activities for September. Some numbers given were: 5,747 miles patrolled, 227 traffic citations issued, 127 warning issued, 11 nontraffic citations / criminal arrests, 11 motor vehicle accidents and 364 total calls answered.Total received in fines and reports were $2,935.44. Johnson also spoke about the addition of the police department's donated crime unit vehicle. He added that the vehicle is being painted and prepped and will be unveiled to the public in the near future.• Roadmaster Ted Bogosh spoke of numerous projects and work ambitions, ranging from road repairs, road signs and vehicle maintenance. A motion establishing a 40 mile per hour speed limit on School Road was approved 3-0 during last months meeting.• Bogosh, a member of the Andreas VFW Post 5069, also spoke about the post is looking for names of veterans for their veterans monument, which is located outside the West Penn Annex building. To be eligable, the veteran must have resided (as stated on DD-214) in West Penn Township while serving in or during war time. Applications are available at the township office, 27 Municipal Road.•Engineer Ron Madison, Rettew Engineering, talked about various subdivision and land development plans. He also praised the efforts of the both Walker and West Penn Township supervisors and committee members in their efforts to push forward with the Act 537 plan.• Bill Anders, code enforcement officer, submitted his monthly report for September. It showed six permits issued, two zoning permits denied, one driveway permit issued and four moving in permits. Fee collected were $850.• Secretary Karen Wittig spoke of the township's early renewal via Capital Blue Cross. The township agreed to lock into the 13.77 percent lock in rate.• A letter request from Brandon Wagner to hold a street luge charity event in the township was tabled until further information could be provided.
