NL defense delivers another win

Four out of their first five possessions were turnovers via fumbles. Their opponent had a first-and-goal from the three-yard line in the waning minutes. A 20-yard field goal in the final minute could have given the other team a win.

However, Northern Lehigh found a way to prevail, 18-16 over Saucon Valley, to remain perfect at 3-0 on the season."We understood that Saucon Valley was going to be tough to stop," NL head coach Joe Tout admitted. "They're the best team we faced so far, but the bottom line is - we have got to get better."The win definitely wasn't one of their prettier victories. In fact, when Nathaniel Schriffert's 20-yard field goal attempt sailed just wide, only then could the locals breathe a little easier, knowing that the win was theirs. Both teams were rusty, as six of the game's first nine possessions resulted in lost fumbles."Both teams have work to do," Tout reiterated. "But as soon as (SV) figures out their turnovers, they're going to win football games. We're happy to be 3-0, but if we turn the ball over like that, we can't win games."The first points came on a 19-yard field goal from Schriffert with 5:18 left in the first. The second frame started with NL scoring on a beautiful play by Caleb Johnson, as he caught a tough pass in between defenders and broke loose for a 74-yard reception for a 6-3 NL lead. Two fumbles were ensued by three punts, before the victors got the ball on their own 49. A 24-yard scoring catch by senior receiver Shawn Shupp with: 00.2 left on the clock gave the 'Dawgs a 12-3 lead at the break."Against a good team like Northern Lehigh, you can't do what we did and expect to win," SV head coach Matt Evancho admitted later. "We're headed toward fixing those problems."Those problems dissipated in the second, as a ten-play, 58-yard drive brought six. It ended when Keith Mosher raced in from the five, cutting the NL lead to 12-9 with over seven left in the third. An interception, a fumble and a turnover on downs ended the third, but the Panthers took their first play from scrimmage in the fourth and saw Mosher connect with Justin Blobe for an 82-yard scoring reception, giving their team the lead with ten to play.NL's next possession ate nearly six minutes off the clock, as they went twelve plays and 65 yards, before Marsh connected with Shupp again. The senior receiver caught it, and made some nice moves out to the right, before finding room and providing his team with what proved to be the game-winner.NL's defensive line proved heroic late, as SV's first-and-goal from the NL three took the Panthers nowhere.Johnson finished the night with a remarkable performance, rushing 16 times for 105 yards, and making five catches for 129 yards and a score, leading the locals to the win."We knew Johnson was going to get the ball," Evancho stated. "They had two or three guys in front of him and he was tough to bring down all night."
