Rush officers take aim

Rush Township police officers take aim as they qualify at a McAdoo firing range with their newly-purchased AR-15's. In January of 2010, Rush Township supervisors voted to sell the department's rifles. Late last month, Rush supervisors decided the department needed them and chose to repurchase two AR-15's. The vote was 2 to 1, with Jeaninne Motrini and Shawn Gilbert voting yes, and Robert Leibensperger voting no. The AR-15 is a lightweight, 5.56 mm, air-cooled, gas-operated and magazine-fed semi-automatic rifle. AR-15's are also used heavily by the United States military for its combination of power and portability. Officers qualifying from left are Adam Sinton, Corey Herring (with his own AR-15) and Sgt. Duane Frederick. The officers are required to qualify in various scenarios and firing positions, such as standing, kneeling and the prone position, in addition to a rapid transition from AR to side arm.
