What seemed like a routine motion to pass a revised employee volunteer policy turned in to an argument between supervisors and some audience members at the Rush Township board of supervisors meeting Thursday evening.

The revised policy guidelines prevent any Rush Township employee who is a member of a volunteer fire company or other emergency response group from getting paid if he or she responds outside the border of the township and are only to be paid if he or she is responding to the emergency between 7 a.m. and 3 p.m.The policy won't prevent a volunteer from responding outside the township, which would be against the state law, but it will prevent that person from being paid.Although Rush Township Fire Chief Barry Messerschmitt wrote the policy up and it was approved by all three supervisors, one of which is a fire company volunteer, the discussion at the meeting generated enough evidence to the board that it felt the motion should be tabled and a meeting held with the volunteers and fire company personnel before the board makes its final decision next month.Next board of supervisors meeting will be Thursday, Aug. 16 at 7 p.m. in the municipal building.
