Bulldogs destroy Wilson

After last week's 21-7 win over Southern Lehigh, Northern Lehigh head coach Joe Tout thought that his team didn't really put their opponent away, when presented with the opportunity.

In order to continue improvement on the season, he challenged his squad to do that very task, if they had the chance this week. When the Bulldogs took the early lead in the first half against Wilson, they rose to the challenge and accelerated their high-powered offense to destroy the Warriors, 55-12, and improve to 2-0 on the young season."We thought that last week, we had the chance to put Southern Lehigh away," Tout admitted. "Tonight at halftime, we challenged them to do that and they definitely rose up to the task, and that will only make us better in the long run."After Northern Lehigh took the lead, 21-0 in the first quarter, Wilson responded with a score, but that was about all it could muster. The Bulldogs defense was scintillating, limiting Wilson to negative yardage on the ground (-21 yards rushing).Even though the effort was near perfect, Tout sees room for improvement."Defensively, we feel that we're veterans out there on the field," Tout mentioned. "But we still have to get better. Our pass rush needs to get better and there are some other things that we can definitely improve on. But we're happy with tonight."Tout should be smiling, as his team boasts a perfect record with two impressive wins so far. Early on, NL took the lead right away on their first possession of the game. Six plays were needed to post a score, as senior tailback Trevor Yashur zipped through a crowd of potential tacklers and darted up the left for the lead."All around I think we're doing awesome as a team," Yashur complimented. "Our line has been doing really well and offensively, I don't think we have necessarily one guy to focus on to stop."After a Warrior punt, NL returned to work, as this time, it took eight plays to reach paydirt again. This time, senior Dalton Johnson raced in from the nine for a 14-0 lead.Shortly after, a Wilson punt turned into another scoring opportunity, as Dylan Hofmann outran special team defenders for a 61-yard punt return for a 21-0 lead, following Kirk Bender's third PAT."Against a good program like Northern Lehigh, you want to get out to a good start, and tonight we didn't do that," Wilson head coach Brett Comp admitted.Next, it was Comp's team to strike, as the visitors compiled a 15-play, 65-yard drive, ending in a 19-yard TD competion from Ryan Dailey to Trey Robinson, cutting into the Bulldog lead at 21-6.Not much before half, NL's offense hit again, as Yashur caught a lateral at the Wilson 31 and outmaneuvered would-be tacklers for a brilliant score, giving his team a 28-6 lead.Wilson's next possession stalled and it punted to Yashur at the NL 38, only to see the talented senior return it to the Wilson 10. It only seemed right for Yashur to run in a play later for a 35-6 lead, and the score remained there at the intermission. After the break, NL didn't slow down, but rather n't slow down, but rather continued to romp their rivals, scoring twice quickly. Kirk Bender scored on a 18-yard trounce, and David Getz intercepted a Dailey pass and returned it 44 yards for the next, and the victors ballooned it to 48-6 with 5:15 left in the third.Wilson didn't quit, as they scored right afterwards on a Angelo Perrucci five-yard run, but that was about all they could do against the impressive defensive effort of the locals.NL tacked on another score, as junior Darien Middaugh caught a Wilson kickoff, and found the endzone for a 70-yard kickoff return."We definitely got better tonight, from last week," Tout reiterated. "We still had some breakdowns and can improve, but we're happy with this win."
