Especially when there are local elections, clusters of political signs turn up in various areas.

The western side of the innerborough bridge in Jim Thorpe is one location where you'll find lots of signs accumulated. There are many, many other places.Obviously, motorists can't read all these signs and still drive safely. There is a red light located here, so it's assumed the motorists will look at them while waiting for the traffic light to change.Sometimes such clusters are located along busy highways in school zones. This could create a dangerous situation if it is assumed the signs are being read.There's a purpose to the political signs along the road, and we're not objecting to them. Except in school zones.In school zones, children cross the streets and there is a lot of bus traffic. In fact, there is a lot of vehicular traffic in general.Many school zones have reduced speed limits to enhance safety.Because of the concentration that should be given by motorists when driving in school zones, they shouldn't be distracted by advertising signs especially a mass of small political signs.There are enough locations along roads and highways that such signs can be placed without putting them in school zones.We realize many school students are old enough to vote. It's no reason to clutter the zones with groups of advertisements which could be distracting to drivers.In all fairness, we haven't heard of political signs causing any accidents in these school zones. But the mere fact that they can be distracting is reason enough to not have them there.By Ron Gowerrgower@tnonline.com
