Lehighton teen's efforts benefit local food pantry

A Lehighton teenager recently presented a check of $1,575 to the Lehighton Food Pantry to complete his senior project.

Matthew Schweitzer, 16, son of Stephen and Debbie Schweitzer of Lehighton, held a benefit concert on March 19 at Trinity Lutheran Church, Luther Hall, which featured members of the Praise Band from the church. Matthew, who plays the bass guitar, participated in the concert. He will be a junior at Lehighton Area High School in the fall.Carolyn Long, volunteer coordinator, accepted the donation. She said that the funds will be used to purchase more food for the pantry, which feeds approximately 450 people a month. Each family is given three days of food a month.The center fed 400 people at this time last year and has fed as many as 550 a month.Long said that the funds will be used to complement the food items that were recently collected by the U.S. Mail Carriers Food Drive."We appreciate all the donations," said Long. "The numbers of people who need food are rising."
