Traveling along SR534 in Kresgeville, passers-by have noticed pretty purple "boxes" around the Polk Township Nature Park entrance. They look like some kind of Japanese lanterns. No, there was not a party at the park and no, they are not Japanese lanterns. They are insect traps. The Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture is deploying 4,000 of the traps as part of a statewide survey of the emerald ash borer-a small, green beetle that has been devastating ash trees throughout the Northeast United States.
