Motorist who killed teacher charged

A Schuylkill County man, the driver of a car that collided with a motorcycle killing a school teacher, has been charged with homicide by vehicle while driving under the influence (DUI), and other counts.

State police at Frackville said Edward C. O'Boyle, 38, of Mahanoy City, was arraigned Thursday before Senior District Judge Elizabeth Romig, of Frackville. In addition to the homicide by vehicle-DUI count, O'Boyle was also charged with involuntary manslaughter, homicide by vehicle, DUI, and summary counts of driving on roadways laned for traffic and restraint systems.If convicted of the homicide by vehicle-DUI count, O'Boyle would face a mandatory minimum sentence of three to six years in a state prison.He was released after posting 10 percent of $25,000 bail set by Romig.He is accused in the death of Jeffrey A. Donnelly, 51, of Barnesville, who was a teacher in the Mahanoy Area School District.The crash occurred on Sept. 18 about 7:04 p.m. along Township Route 891 in Ryan Township.At the time troopers said O'Boyle, operating a 1994 Jeep Cherokee Sport, was westbound and driving uphill and negotiating a curve, while Donnelly was driving a 2006 Suzuki motorcycle, eastbound.Donnelly was driving downhill and negotiating a left curve. O'Boyle, troopers said, failed to stay in his lane of travel, drifted into the oncoming lane and collided into the bike. The bike came to rest on the right side of the road. Donnelly, who was wearing a helmet, was pronounced dead at the scene.Trooper Michael D. Marinchak said a chemical test of O'Boyle's blood showed him over the legal limit of .08 percent. Marinchak did not indicate what the BAC was for O'Boyle.Donnelly taught technical education, a woodworking course, in the middle school. He also taught a computer aided design course.
