Bomb squad called

Four World War II style, pineapple hand grenades, with pins intact, were found in a pail inside a West Penn Township garage yesterday morning.

A five-member bomb squad, and an ATF (Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms) agent, dispatched to the scene from Reading, took the grenades from the building to a site near Lizard Creek and detonated them.Lt. David Shilling of the bomb squad said the grenades were destroyed locally because it was deemed too dangerous to transport them."We didn't want to transport them not knowing if they were live or not," said Shilling. The incident happened at the Nunemacher residence along Route 895 in West Penn Township, about a half mile north of the intersection with Route 309.A family member, who asked that their name not be used, said the grenades were discovered while the family was going through belongings of someone recently deceased.Police said they were inside a plastic pail with a lid, inside an exterior garage. The Nunemachers contacted the Schuylkill County Communications Center, which notified the county Emergency Management Agency and West Penn Police Department. Also dispatched were the West Penn Fire Department and the Penn-Mahoning Ambulance. The EMA contacted the Reading City Bomb Squad because the status of the grenades was unknown.Melissa Boyer of the West Penn Township Police Department said the grenades "appeared to be live with pins and screws" and the bomb squad was called as a precaution. She said the Nunemachers did the right thing by calling the Communications Center."I think anything could have set off the grenades because of the rust on the pins," she said.Shilling said when his squad arrived, they x-rayed the grenades in an effort to determine if they were live "but the x-rays were indeterminate."Both Shilling and West Penn Township Chief of Police Brian Johnson said the Nunemachers won't face any criminal charges."We get this all the time," said Shilling. "People have souvenirs and it's hard to tell if they're live or not."He added that there is nothing illegal about having the grenades.Traffic was permitted to flow on Route 895 during most of the duration of the grenade situation. The two-lane road was closed when the relics were removed from the garage and remained close until they were detonated, which took only about 20 minutes.
