Western Schuylkill experiencing flooding, shelters opening

The National Weather Service has issued a flash flood watch for Carbon, Monroe, Northampton, Lehigh and Schuylkill counties as heavy rain continues to drench the area.

Parts of Schuylkill County, still cleaning up from flooding caused by torrential rains a few weeks ago, are being hit with yet another deluge.

Tremont and Pine Grove are again under water. The City of Pottsville has declared a state of emergency, with all travel restricted until further notice. The county courthouse is closed.

People in parts of St. Clair and Port Carbon are being evacuated.

Schuylkill Deputy Emergency Management Coordinator John W. Blickley said that as of 9 a.m. today, Frackville, Gilberton, Tower City, St. Clair, Frailey Township, Porter Township and surrounding areas were also flooded.

“Currently residents in low-lying areas are being evacuated and are being relocated to temporary shelters,” he said. “Pine Grove has opened its shelter at the Pine Grove High School with assistance from the American Red Cross.”

Shelters are open at Pine Grove High School, Saint Stephen’s Church Port Carbon, Frackville Borough building and Tremont fire company.

Secondary roads in flood-prone areas may be affected and Route 61 is closed at several locations, including Cressona, Pottsville and Frackville.

Officials remind drivers to not try to cross flooded areas of roads.

The National Weather Service in State College on Sunday afternoon issued a flash flood warning for the county.

Heavy rain continued overnight.

The National Weather Service has issued a flood advisory for eastern Schuylkill County and parts of central Pennsylvania.

A flash flood advisory has also been issued for Slatington, Allentown and New Tripoli through Tuesday.

The National Weather Service anticipates up to 2 inches of rain to fall in the county today. Rain will continue overnight and through Tuesday.

Some locations that may experience flooding include Tamaqua, Shenandoah, Mahanoy City, Frackville, Orwigsburg, McAdoo, Girardville, Hometown, Tuscarora, Oneida, Grier City-Park Crest, Altamont, Englewood, Delano, Nuremburg, Sheppton, Brandonville, McKeansburg, Coaldale and Locust Lake State Park, according to the Weather Service.

Many people have posted videos and photos on Facebook.

One man posted a video of the Schuylkill Haven dive team using motorized rafts to navigate the streets of Port Carbon.

A woman posted a video of a partially submerged car floating down the street in Tremont.

Route 61 is closed at several locations, including Cressona, Pottsville and Frackville.
