Filled Sunday

Effort UMC had a filled Sunday morning. Recognition of graduates, was part of the 8:30 and 11 a.m. services.

From 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. the last Fellowship Breakfast until September was held and the Sunday school promotion of the children took place at the 11 a.m. service.

St. Matthew’s VBS

This year’s VBS theme at St. Matthew’s UCC Church in Kunkletown is Splash Canyon. Children are invited to grab a life jacket and oar, for VBS taking place from 9 a.m. to noon. at the church July 9-13.

Friday’s party, including lunch and water games, will be held in the grove noon to 1:30 p.m.

Those age 13 and up are needed to volunteer with music, crafts, games, snacks, Bible challenge and Bible story telling.

Also needed helpers behind the scenes in the months leading up to VBS to help gather items, make some decorations, plan and other logistics shares Staci Gower, coordinator of Christian Formation.

Flea market

Our Lady Queen of Peace Church’s annual flea market days and bake sale are almost here.

The event will be held with the outside starting at 7 a.m., and from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday; from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.; Saturday, outside starting at 7 a.m. and inside from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.; and from 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday.

The Gilbert church is selling spaces on the front lawn of the church along Route 209 for crafters, retail companies, and those who want to have their own yard sale. Applications are on the church website.

The event will also include a basket raffle, a silent auction and more.

Lunchtime menu

The Senior Center menu for the Chestnuthill group, meeting on Wednesdays and Fridays is Swedish meatballs for Friday and beef and broccoli for next Wednesday.

The center opens at 9 a.m. and closes at 2 p.m. each meeting day.

To order the meal, call the center manager, Dolores Casalaspro, at 570-242-6770 by 11 a.m. the day before.

The Chestnuthill group, meeting at Zion Lutheran Fellowship Hall in Brodheadsville, will have a special event next Wednesday: Theresa Hillard, Community Relations with Geisinger, will be presenting Wellness BINGO at 10:30 a.m.

Family Fun Time

Western Pocono Community Library will be holding a Saturday Family Fun Time every Saturday beginning at 10:30 a.m. This program is open to families of all ages; there will be stories, songs, games, and crafts.

Car show

The 23rd annual car show will be held at the West End Fair in Gilbert, Sunday, rain or shine.

Car registration begins at 8 a.m. Gates open at 8 a.m.

There is an admission fee, but children 12 and under can enter for free.

There will also be peddle tractor pulls and music by Chris Eckert, as well as a flea market and craft show.

Graduates honored

Pleasant Valley Assembly of God Church, Brodheadsville, will honor its graduates on Sunday, whether high school or college. The church administrator asks families to email her at olga@pvag.net with the information as to from where the student is graduating.

Kresgeville VBS

Salem-St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Kresgeville will hold its VBS right after services at about 10:30 a.m. and continues until 12:30 p.m. The agenda includes Bible stories, games, crafts, activities and lunch. The dates are: June 24, July 22 and Aug. 19.

The theme of Neighbors continues.

This Sunday the focus is: Our Animal Neighbors.

Special guests will be Tom Connor, Carbon County Animal Shelter, and Benji.

On July 22, the topic is: Helping Puerto Rico.

The children of Puerto Rico are still suffering from the devastation brought by Hurricane Maria. Thousands of families remain without basic needs. Attendees will learn about how different people are reaching out to help and what folks can do to help these neighbors in need.

On Aug. 19, the topic will be: Our Older Neighbors.

Class members will go to the Jablonskis’ house for learning and fun. They’ll have a chance to get to know some of the older congregation members who will share stories with them about what life was like for them as children.

Crafts will be made to share with the shut-ins and than it’s picnic time and swimming. Involved families are asked to bring a dish to share and also register with the church or with Joan McKinsey.

Nailing competition

Monroe County Habitat for Humanity will hold its second annual She Nailed It fundraising competition at 3 p.m. Sunday, at Memorytown USA, 432 Grange Road, Mount Pocono.

State Reps. Rosemary Brown and Maureen Madden, and Stroudsburg’s first female Mayor Tarah Probst will participate on teams hammering for Habitat. George Roberts, Senior TV-13 News Anchor and producer of the Night Report will be on hand to emcee.

Teams of five women will go head-to-head in a nail-biting, nail-hammering competition to see who can hammer the most nails into a board the fastest and be crowned the 2018 She Nailed It champions.

Free concert

The free summer concerts continue at the Chestnuthill Township Park, 221 Route 715-Brodheadsville with a performance by Double Shot at 6 p.m. Sunday.

Mark Johnson and Pamela Clark will present Yesterday’s Classics and Today’s Hits.

Attendees are asked to bring a lawn chair, blanket and bug spray.

Blood drives

An American Red Cross blood drive is scheduled to take place from 1 to 6 p.m. Monday at the American Legion Post 927 in Gilbert.

The Western Pocono Community Library in Brodheadsville hosts the Miller-Keystone Blood Center folks for a blood drive, including blood platelets and whole blood on the first Wednesday of the month the from 7:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. and on the third Wednesday from noon to 6 p.m.

Middlecreek VBS

Middlecreek Church on Dorshimer Road in Kresgeville will hold its Vacation Bible School, for children ages 3 through 12, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. beginning June 29. The theme is: Shipwrecked, Rescued by Jesus.

Polk supervisors

The board of supervisors for Polk Township will meet at 7 p.m. Monday at the municipal building in Kresgeville.

Knit & crochet

Zion Lutheran’s busy needle handlers are meeting again at 1 p.m. Tuesday in the parish hall. Newcomers are welcome.

If someone doesn‘t know how to knit or crochet, the group will be happy to teach that skill.

Also, for those who have no supplies, they should not worry, say members. They have supplies on hand to start someone off in this particular skill and ministry.

West End GOP

The West End Republican Club meets regularly on the fourth Tuesday of each month. This month the group will meet at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Lakeside Restaurant, 5154 S. Hamilton Blvd. in Saylorsburg. Republican minded citizens are encouraged to join the group to socialize, listen, discuss and learn.

Those wishing to eat before the meeting should arrive by 6 p.m.

Sharp crayons

Sharpen Your Crayons, a coloring program at the Western Pocono Community Library in Brodheadsville for all ages, continues every Wednesdays at 6 p.m. This program is free and open to all ages. New coloring projects available each week.
