Tree of Heaven

The Monroe County Conservation District is offering assistance in the year 2020 for Tree of Heaven (Ailanthus altissima) removal. The removal of these plants is part of the district’s program to reduce the number of spotted lanternfly (Lycorma delicatula). The spotted lanternfly is an invasive species that was first introduced to Pennsylvania in 2014.

While this pest doesn’t bite or sting, it can be very damaging to agriculture, and has the potential to be a nuisance when allowed to reach high population densities.

The Tree of Heaven is the preferred habitat of the spotted lanternfly. Removing this plant helps limit food and habitat resources for the lanternflies.

If you believe you have tree of heaven on your property and would like assistance with removal, complete the Assistance Request form found on mcconservation.org/spotted-lanternfly.html. The form must be submitted to MCCD by Feb 14.

Anyone with questions may contact the district at 570-629-3060 or at afmccd@ptd.net.
