Special Mass

Our Lady Queen of Peace Church will hold Mass for the solemnity of Mary at 4 p.m. Tuesday and also at 11 a.m. Wednesday.

Pork & sauerkraut

The Western Pocono Lions Club will hold a New Year’s Day 2020 pork & sauerkraut dinner from noon to 2 p.m. New Year’s Day at Zion United Lutheran Church Parish Hall, Route 209, Brodheadsville.

Schools reopen

The school day for Pleasant Valley students will begin again Thursday. The school calendar also calls for the Pleasant Valley Band Parents meeting at 7 p.m. Thursday in the high school band room.

Center is open

The Polk Township solid waste center will be open Thursday for garbage and recycling for permit holders.

Chestnuthill Seniors

The Chestnuthill Seniors begin the new year of twice weekly gatherings on Friday. The activity is playing bingo. The light lunch menu includes: pasta and veggie salad, three-bean salad, apple, cookies and yogurt.

The regular menu is: mac & cheese, stewed tomatoes, carrots and mango.

For Jan. 8, the activity is blood pressure screening. The light lunch menu is chicken breast sandwich, coleslaw, fruit cocktail, a whole wheat bun and pudding.

The regular menu features beef stew over egg noodles, yellow squash, stewed tomatoes and an orange.

Attendees are reminded to call in their menu choice by 11 a.m. the day before at 570-420-3735 or 570-242-6770.

Reorganization meetings

• The Chestnuthill Township Board of Supervisors will hold its reorganization meeting at 5 p.m. Jan. 6 in the township municipal building in Brodheadsville.

The first regular meeting of the Chestnuthill Township is on the calendar for 7 p.m. Jan. 7.

• Eldred Township will meet for its reorganizational meeting at 7 p.m. Jan. 6. The first regular Board of Supervisors meeting will follow.

Eldred Township reminds all residents that if there are emergencies, the following procedures are in place: If power lines are down, call 911 and PPL, 800-342-5775; for accidents with injuries call 911 and the state police; for downed trees or other road condition problems, during normal business hours call the township at 610-381-4252. After hours call state police at 610-377-1850.

• Polk Township will meet for its reorganizational meeting at 7 p.m. Monday. The first regular supervisors meeting will be held at 7 p.m. Jan. 9.

• Ross Township is slated to meet for its reorganizational meeting at 7 p.m. Jan. 6. The first regular meeting of the township Board of Supervisors follows.

Community Center

The Eldred Township Community Center and Thrift Store is still closed. It is slated to reopen Jan. 8.

Soup sale

Effort UMC is having a homemade soup sale, including bacon corn chowder and homestyle chicken rice, now. Orders will be accepted through Jan. 15. Pickup is set for Jan. 19.

WEPOSC meeting

The West End Park & Open Space Commission is slated to meet at 6:30 p.m. Jan. 8, at the Chestnuthill Park Building in the township municipal complex on Route 715 in Brodheadsville.

Suicide prevention

Pleasant Valley Presbyterian Church, Brodheadsville, is hosting a neighborhood meeting on Suicide Prevention from 6 to 8 p.m. Jan. 23 titled “We are Not Alone: What to Look for and Where to get Help.” The snow date is Feb. 6.

Resource tables available from 5 to 6:30 p.m.

The church is located at 150 Pilgrim Way, Brodheadsville, next to West End Library.

Strombolies

The REACH mission team at Effort UMC is taking orders for their handmade strombolies through Jan. 25. Funds realized will benefit the mission trip to Littlestown. For more information, call the church at 570-629-1890.

Comedy Night

The American Legion Riders Chapter 927 is holding its Comedy Night on Jan. 31 at the Polk Township Volunteer Fire Company in Kresgeville.

The Polk Township Auxiliary is hosting it.

Dinner begins at 6 p.m.; the show begins at 7 p.m. It features three comedians. There will also be baked goods and a live auction.

Winter Fair

The West End Fair is going to host a West End Winter Fair at the fairgrounds in Gilbert from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Feb. 22, and from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Feb. 23.

There will be bands, food, vendors, tricky tray, hayrides, s’mores, fire barrels, lantern releases and much more.

Philly Flower Show

The West End Park and Open Space Commission is sponsoring a bus trip to the Philadelphia Flower Show on March 2. This year’s theme, is Riviera Holiday, as inspired by the world’s exotic Mediterranean Gardens.

Chat with garden experts, visit top floral designers and purchase cut flowers in the Market Place. Lunch is on one’s own at the Convention Center or the nearby popular Reading Terminal Market. The bus leaves Chestnuthill Park at 8 a.m. and returns at 6 p.m. For cost and to make a reservation call Bernie Kozen at 570-992-9733 or contact him at bkozen@weposc.org.
