The West End Home Association of American Legion Post 927 will meet at 7:30 tonight.

Tax help

Salem UCC, Gilbert, will once again be the West End site for help from AARP volunteers to help do one’s income taxes. That help will be available from 9 a.m. to noon beginning Thursday and continuing through April 9.

No appointment is required. If the Pleasant Valley School District closes due to inclement weather for Thursdays, the tax help site is also closed. If there is a delay, the center will be open at the regular time.

Legion meeting

Post 927 of the American Legion will meet at 7:30 p.m. Thursday at the Post Home in Gilbert.

PV Band Parents

The February meeting of the Pleasant Valley Band Parents will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday in the PVHS Band Room.

Busy WEF volunteers

Chief Don Zipp reports that the West End Fire Company volunteers responded to 47 incidents this month.

In addition, firefighters completed their annual first aid, CPR, bloodborne pathogens, and hazardous materials training this month.

Chestnuthill seniors

On Friday the main meal for the Chestnuthill Seniors gathering at Zion Lutheran in the Fellowship Hall in Brodheadsville from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. will be tuna noodle casserole, peas, stewed tomatoes, whole wheat bread and tropical fruit.

The light meal is garden salad, three-bean salad, orange, yogurt and a whole wheat roll.

Next Wednesday the regular meal will be pork loin with apple gravy, mashed potatoes, sauerkraut, banana and a whole-grain dinner role.

The activity Friday is Healthy Steps in Motion and on Wednesday it is the usual blood pressure screening.

Phantoms game

Western Pocono Community Library is hosting a Night at the Phantoms, the Lehigh Phantoms, at 7:05 p.m. Feb. 29.

Exercise class

St. Matthew’s UCC, Kunkletown, has a women’s exercise class every Monday and Wednesday, beginning at 1 p.m.

It includes about 30 minutes doing low-impact aerobics and about 20 minutes of toning.

PVES Family Fun

Friday is the day for the PVES Family Fun Night.

Saturday breakfast

McMichaels UMC is slated to have a donation-only breakfast from 8 to 10 a.m. Saturday. It entails a full breakfast with beverages.

The church is handicapped accessible.

Bird feeders

The West End Park and Open Space Commission is sponsoring a pine cone bird feeders event, free of charge, from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday at the Chestnuthill Park Building.

Shawl ministry

Our Lady Queen of Peace Church also has a Prayer Shawl ministry. Come to the Teen Room the second Saturday of the month from 10 a.m. to noon as participants pray and create prayer shawls that are given to families in need of healing and hope.

Effort pantry

The Supplemental Food Resource Center at Effort UMC will be open from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday.

Human trafficking

Our Lady Queen of Peace is having an evening of reflection on the feast day of St. Josephine Bakhita, the patron saint of victims of human trafficking. It will take place at 7 p.m. Saturday in the cafe. Attendees will learn about this saint and how trafficking can occur in the community.

Farewell celebration

The church family of Pleasant Valley Assembly of God Church, Brodheadsville, celebrated the ministry of Pastor Andre Anderson and his family, including Mandy, Isaiah, Maree and Mya, as they bade him farewell and Godspeed on his next God assignment this past Sunday.

Breakfasts set

Our Lady Queen of Peace, Brodheadsville, will hold a freewill offering breakfast in McCawley Hall on Sunday from after the 8 a.m. Mass until the 11 a.m. Mass. It includes scrambled egg and bacon.

Effort UMC will hold its fellowship breakfast between the 8:30 and 11 a.m. worship service Sunday. Freewill donations will be received.

Riders meet

The American Legion Riders of Post 927 is slated to meet at 10:30 a.m. Sunday. They contribute veterans, community and enjoy riding. For more information, contact everett.shaver@yahoo.com or call 570-977-8208.

Sunday supper

Our Lady Queen of Peace Church is again hosting a Sunday supper from 3 to 4 p.m. this coming Sunday.

The West End Mission meal will be Feb. 13.

SAL meeting

Effort UMW

The United Methodist Women of Effort UMC will be meeting at 7 p.m. Monday at the church for the group’s monthly meeting, a business meeting. Devotions will be led by Alma Middleton. Hostesses are she and Lucy Boomer.

Zion Lutheran Church’s Knit & Crochet group will meet at 1 p.m. Tuesday.

OTOH meeting

Operation Touch of Home will meet at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the American Legion Post home in Gilbert, weather permitting.

K of C free-throw

Knights of Columbus Free Throw Challenge will be held Feb 15. Registration begins at 9 a.m. at Notre Dame High School in East Stroudsburg. Boys and girls ages 9-14 are invited to attend.

Pocono Pony

Pocono Pony, which serves the West End, provides individual and group trips to shows and events in and around Monroe County, Monday through Friday.

Seniors, 65+ and people with disabilities are eligible for subsidized rates. Fares are based on mileage traveled and the rider’s eligibility for fare subsidies. All buses are ADA accessible.

PVEN needs

Current needs for the food pantry portion of the Pleasant Valley Ecumenical Network include: cereal — hot and cold, peanut butter, beef stew, canned soups — the add-water kind, large canned soups, stuffing mix, canned meats-such as chicken or ham, tuna fish — cans or pouches, mac-n-cheese, baked beans, canned beans, rice, canned fruit, canned vegetables — peas, carrots, potatoes/mixed vegetables, pancake mix/syrup, coffee/tea, with future expiration dates.

It is best to bring food during drop-off hours — 9 a.m. to noon on Monday, Tuesday, or Friday. One can also call 570-992-3136 to make an appointment to meet a volunteer during any other normal business hours.

Fresh fruits and vegetables are particularly welcome, too.

Donors are asked to bring fresh produce, eggs and other perishables the first through third Tuesday mornings of the month at 8 a.m. or the fourth Tuesday of the month between 5 and 6 p.m.

Please, do not leave food outside if no one is on site to receive it. All food donations should be presented directly to a volunteer.

All Sports Club

The Pleasant Valley All-Sports Club is slated to meet at 7 p.m. Monday in the high school library.

Valentine’s dinner

American Legion Post 927, Fairgrounds Road, Gilbert, is hosting two days of Valentine’s dinners with two seatings each evening.

That will be Feb. 14 and Feb. 15. Seatings are at 6 or 7:30 p.m., either day. Reservations for this table seating meal are required.

Tree sponsorships

The Kettle Creek Environmental Education Center is once again promoting its Sponsor-A-Maple Tree program. Sponsoring a tree by family, company, etc., helps Monroe County students.

The tree sponsorship includes many benefits: receipt of a certificate of sponsorship, a map of the sugarbush showing the location of one’s tree, a pint of pure maple syrup from the Sugarbush and free admission for up to four people to the Annual Public Maple Sugaring Day on March 7. Sponsoring a maple tree makes a great birthday or holiday gift as well.
