Weatherly competitor delivers meals, plays billiards

Ernie Stauffer likes to help others.

The Weatherly man delivers meals to his fellow seniors every other week who cannot get out to get their own meals.

“There are two of us who go out every other week,” Stauffer said. “It really gives me a good feeling helping other seniors who are shut in or can’t get out to get meals. They really depend on us because we don’t want to see them run out of food.”

The 72-year-old has 13 people on his route and he loves what he does.

He also almost left this year’s Carbon County Senior Games when he heard meal delivery volunteers were needed to deliver meals last week after a scheduling conflict took a few drivers off the schedule that day.

Stauffer has been delivering meals for four years and has no intentions of stopping anytime soon.

In addition to serving his fellow seniors, Stauffer can be found traveling down from Weatherly to the Panther Valley Senior Center in Nesquehoning twice a week for some friendly competition in billiards.

“Our senior center doesn’t have a pool table so we come down to Panther Valley and shoot,” he said. “We have made a lot of friends and have a good time.” When asked about the senior games, the three-year competitor said that he participates for the camaraderie.

“If you want to have fun and have a little competition and make new friends, this is the place to come,” he said. “You may only see them once a year, but you remember them from year to year. You may not recall their name but that’s why it is called the senior games.”
