Walnutport seeks new tax collector

Walnutport has an opening for a tax collector effective the start of the new year.

Borough council on Thursday discussed the vacancy for the office of tax collector.

Qualified candidates have until 3 p.m. Nov. 7 to send their proof of required certification to the borough office.

The appointed tax collector will hold office until the first Monday in January after the first municipal election occurring 60 days after the vacancy occurs, and will serve in that position from January 2019 through Jan. 6, 2020.

To be eligible to serve as tax collector, the applicant must be a registered voter of the borough.

Additionally, at the time the tax collector is sworn into office, he or she must present a signed affidavit to the borough secretary that states they live in the borough and have resided in the borough for at least one year immediately before the appointment as tax collector.

Also, before being appointed by borough council, the appointed tax collector must obtain Act 48 Certified Tax Collector Certification.

In addition, the tax collector will be required to collect the Northern Lehigh School District per Capita tax and the Northern Lehigh School District Real Estate Taxes.

The appointed tax collector cannot hold another elective borough office at the same time.

All services performed by the tax collector shall take place at borough hall.

The tax collector’s current salary is 4 percent of the amount of taxes collected for the borough. The rate is subject to change in the future.

Last month, council accepted the resignation of Bob Treskot as borough tax collector, effective Dec. 31.
