Walnutport receives three grants totaling nearly $500K

Walnutport has nearly $500,000 more in its coffers thanks to a trio of grants.

Michael Wentz, borough grant coordinator, shared details with borough council at its workshop last week.

Wentz said the borough received $470,000, including a $200,000 Community Development Block Grant that will include water main replacement, storm sewer upgrades, and redo the road on south Lincoln Avenue.

The borough received a $200,000 Pennsylvania Small Water and Sewer Program grant to install a water line under the canal from Lehigh Street to South Canal Street.

Also, Wentz said the borough received a $70,000 recycling grant through the state Department of Environmental Protection for a new leaf machine.

Borough Mayor Wayne Weidner said he believes Wentz deserves additional funding for his work in securing the grants.

However, Wentz said that wasn’t necessary.

“If somebody doesn’t do it, the money is going to go somewhere else,” Wentz said.

“We’re getting ahead, and it’s helping taxpayers.”
