9,230 news virus cases reported Thursday

The Pennsylvania Department of Health reported Thursday that there were 9,230 additional positive cases of COVID-19, bringing the statewide total to 590,386.

There are 6,142 individuals hospitalized with COVID-19, double the peak in the spring. Of that number, 1,263 patients are in the intensive care unit with COVID-19. Most of the patients hospitalized are ages 65 or older, and most of the deaths have occurred in patients 65 or older.

As of 11:59 p.m. Wednesday, December 23, there were 276 new deaths reported for a total of 14,718 deaths attributed to COVID-19.

In nursing and personal care homes, there are 49,840 resident cases of COVID-19, and 9,070 cases among employees, for a total of 58,910 at 1,443 distinct facilities in all 67 counties.

Carbon County reported 2,433 cases, an increase of 61 cases. Two additional death were reported for a total of 89.

Lehigh County reported 18,571,an increase of 394. Eight more deaths were reported for a total of 468.

Luzerne County has 15,873 cases, an uptick of 121. The county reported five more deaths, bringing the total to 418.

Monroe reported 5,552, an increase of 108 cases. Deaths remained at 189.

Northampton County reported 15,226 cases, 350 more than Wednesday. There are 403 deaths after eight more were reported.

Schuylkill reported 6,988 cases, 132 more than last Monday. Two more deaths were reported for a running total of 231.
