92-year-old looks forward to annual Carbon competition

James Anewalt’s secret to staying young is to keep moving.

The 92-year-old is one of only two men over 90 competing in this year’s Carbon County Senior Games. The other man is 90-year-old Victor Pituch, who was the driving force behind the creation of the games 31 years ago.

The Navy veteran is quiet, humble and happy, and said that he is drawn to the games for many reasons, but none that he can put his finger on.

“There is something that draws me here,” he said, noting that he has been a competitor for too many years to remember. “I just look forward to this.”

Anewalt, who was born and raised in Palmerton before settling down in Lehighton, has excelled over the years in a number of the competitions, but one that stands out is the annual walk.

“I’m a walker,” he said. “A doctor once told me the best thing you can do with your legs is to stay on them. Don’t sit.”

When asked what he would tell someone thinking about participating in the Senior Games, he smiled and said, “There is just something about it that you have to try.”
