Tamaqua sound shaker workshop

In ancient Egypt, a percussion musical implement known as a sistrum was used in dances and religious ceremonies.

Commonly referred to as a “sound shaker,” the sacred instruments are commonly depicted in illustrations of several goddesses, including Isis, Bast and Hathor.

While musical instruments have come a long way since then, the sistrum, or sound shaker, is still relevant.

The Tamaqua Community Art Center, 125 Pine St., Tamaqua, is offering a class on creating your own sound shaker on Sept. 29. Deadline for registration is this Saturday.

The class will be held from 10 a.m. to noon.
