Tamaqua news for April 11, 2019
Zion’s diaper ministry is now accepting applications for the April 20 distribution date. The free ministry is open to families residing within the Tamaqua Area School District.
Zion’s distributes free diapers on the third Saturday of each month, by appointment only. Proof of residency, but not financial status, photo identification and preregistration are required. Each 50-pack bundle of diapers will also come with a pack of wipes. Participants will be provided one bundle of diapers per child, per month, subject to availability.

The Tamaqua Public Library is gearing up for spring with a variety of activities, including some spring cleaning.
Thanks to the generosity of local book lovers, the library’s shelves are overflowing with donated books. To make space for new arrivals, volunteers and staff members have been “cleaning” the shelves and are conducting an ongoing used book sale, just in time for Easter. Additional items, such as VHS tapes, books on cassette and books on CD are also available. The sale will continue through April 20.
A benefit beef or chicken platter sale will be held on April 25. Advanced sale tickets for the pick up only dinners are now being accepted.
The Young Adult book club will meet at 6 p.m. on April 15. This month’s topic of discussion will be the television show “Supernatural.” The evening will include pizza, games and fun-filled facts.
The adult book club will meet at 6 p.m. on April 29. This month’s book is “The Lady in Gold” by Anne Marie O’Connor.

The Rev. Susan Moore will officiate at the 10:25 a.m. worship service this Palm Sunday in Calvary Evangelical Methodist Church in the Lewistown Valley. The service will include a presentation of the Sunday school Easter program.
There will be a Sunday evening service, hymnsing and Bible study, beginning at 6:30 p.m.
Good Friday services will include a silent reflection service at 2:30 p.m. at Frieden’s Lutheran Church in New Ringgold and the community Lenten service at 7 p.m. at Calvary. A hymnsing will be held at 6:45 p.m.
St. Peter’s Union
The Rev. Virginia Heimer will officiate at the 9 a.m. Palm Sunday service at St. Peter’s Church, West Penn.
Also on Sunday, Sunday school classes meet at 10:15 a.m., the junior choir will rehearse at 11 a.m. and Girl Scouts will meet at 6 p.m.
Next week’s activities include: Tuesday, prayer group meets at 5 p.m., women’s group meets at 7 p.m.; Wednesday, Confirmation class meets at 5 p.m.; Maundy Thursday, worship service with table communion at 7:30 p.m.; Good Friday service at 7:30 p.m.; Saturday, Sunday school Easter Egg Hunt at 1 p.m.
Easter Sunday services will be held at 6:30 and 9 a.m. on April 21. Breakfast will be at 7:45 a.m. and Sunday school classes will meet at 10:15 a.m.
St. John Lutheran
The Rev. Phyllis Wolford will officiate at the 9:15 a.m. Palm Sunday service in St. John’s Lutheran Church. The service will include Holy Communion.
Also on Sunday, Sunday school, First Holy Communion and Confirmation classes will meet at 10:30 a.m.
Activities for next week include: Wednesday, midweek Lenten service, 7 p.m., at Zion’s; Maundy Thursday, service at 7 p.m., including stripping of the altar and the celebration of First holy Communion: Good Friday, Tenebrae service at 7 p.m., at Zion’s; Saturday, Easter Vigil, 7 p.m., at Zion’s.
Pastor Jim Williams will officiate at the 10:30 a.m. service this Palm Sunday in Zion Church, Lewistown Valley. Sunday school classes will meet at 9:15 a.m.
On April 15, the fundraiser committee will meet at 6:30 p.m. and the preschool board will meet at 7:30 p.m.
