When 9-year-old Paige Goida of Summit Hill saw firefighters in action extinguishing a furious garage fire last month, it made quite an impression.
So much so that she decided she was going to help those volunteers.
On Sunday, she held a bake sale with goodies she and her mother baked at the Diligence Fire Company in Summit Hill.
All the proceeds went to the fire department.
Besides the money received on the sale of cupcakes and other snacks, she also had a collection jar. In all, she raised $760 for the fire company.
The third-grade student was assisted by classmate and friend Addy Hontz, also age 9, and although they scheduled the sale to last several hours, they ran out of merchandise in less than an hour.
For sale were 48 cupcakes, Rice Krispies Treats, brownies, dozens of cookies and gummy bears.
It was on the afternoon of May 18 that Paige was on Chestnut Street when the borough’s fire siren went off. Down the alley from her, she saw a garage filled with fire and smoke. Then she saw the firetrucks drive past and the volunteers go to work on dousing the flames.
Casey said it was Paige’s idea to have the one-child fundraiser. When Casey returned home that Saturday afternoon, she told her parents about the fire and said she wanted to do something to show her admiration and appreciation.
Paige, the daughter of Casey and Tom Goida of Summit Hill, said, “I saw a fire and thought, wow, they’re really doing this. I thought I would raise money for better equipment or somehow help the firefighters.”
“I saw the firefighters fight the fire,” she said.
Customers at the bake sale were people of all ages.
