Those who wish to learn about the important people, places and events in Slatington history should plan to take part in a cemetery walk.
Sponsored by the Slatington History Preservation Committee, “A Walk Among the Slate Barons” will start at 2 p.m. Sept. 15 in the Fairview Cemetery, located at Fairview and E. South streets.
Those who participate will join the committee as they visit the graves of seven Slate Barons who were part of the borough’s Slate Industry. The rain date is Sept. 22.
The event will also reveal the history behind these individuals, their families, and their business ventures, according to Robert Stettner, treasurer of the group.
“The people can learn about the Slate Barons, slate, politics, local churches and civic organizations,” Stettner said. “It ties in to how the town was formed and grown.”
Judy Gellis-Snyder, president of the group, said she believes it’s important for people to know about their town’s history.
“It’s to educate, motivate, enlighten, and help preserve the history of our area,” Gellis-Snyder said. “I do think if you live here, you should know something about the area that you’re living in.”
Stettner said the group hopes to hold cemetery walks in the fall and spring.
“There’s a lot of history in town between slate, farming, manufacturing, and a lot of notable people from the past,” he said. “A lot of history.”
