Slatington Borough hires new police officers

One business is worried about Slatington’s finances.

Council received a letter from SMF, Structural Metal Fabricators of Palmerton, on Nov. 8.

The company said it will no longer submit quotes for future purchases to the board.

Owner Guy Seifert said, “Sorry to inform the board with regret they will not be quoting equipment to the borough due to history of doing business with the borough and political instability.”

The Carbon County business had been contacted about the possible purchase of a new dump truck for the borough.

Borough Manager Judith Danko will advertise the 1991 KME Fire Truck on Municibid with a minimum of $25,000.

Money raised from the sale of the truck will be used to pay for the lettering and decal unit 2412 at a cost of $4,496 for the fire department along with radio installation at $2,931 and a compressed air system installation of $190.

Along with listing the truck, the borough’s 2007 Dodge Durango police vehicle will also be listed with a minimum bid price of $2,500.

A repair change order was authorized to include $10,941 in the John Freed Way subbase repair.

David Leer of Lehigh Engineering told the board S & G Asphalt LLC found subsoil needed to be replaced during the repairs.

“Work was done to the curb line,” he said.

“One of the truck fenders was as deep in the soil as the curb line. There were three areas approved. It needed to be done to get a good base that is required by Pennsylvania Department of Transportation,” he said.

Police resignation

Borough police officer Joseph Britt submitted a resignation letter to the department.

“He is a good guy,” said Chief David Rachman.

Britt will remain on the department’s payroll until his pending court dates are finished.

On an “emergency need,” the board voted to hire two part-time officers, Kevin Torres and Brian Stern.

The pair will begin working in the borough immediately, according to the board.
