Showers, thunderstorms throughout the weekend

Published August 31. 2018 08:18AM

Residents in part of the northeastern United States will have to dodge showers and thunderstorms in between cookouts, camping trips and other Labor Day weekend activities.

While a full washout is not expected, AccuWeather Senior Meteorologist Carl Babinski expects a completely dry day to be hard to come by across the mid-Atlantic region from Saturday to Monday.

As New England stays largely dry during Saturday and Sunday, residents farther south may have to alter or cut short their outdoor plans due to spotty showers and thunderstorms.

The storms are likely to be most active in Virginia, Maryland, Delaware, Pennsylvania and New Jersey, but a few could spread into New York state, especially on Sunday.

The risk of storms dampening plans will continue into the Labor Day holiday.

While some sunshine is expected for much of the Northeast on Monday, Babinski anticipates showers and thunderstorms to develop, especially over interior locales.

In the midst of holiday gatherings, people should remember to keep a close eye to the sky and seek shelter indoors immediately after the first clap of thunder.

The storms throughout Labor Day weekend will be hit-or-miss in nature, soaking some communities but missing others just a few miles away.

“A warming trend will unfold for Sunday and Labor Day, with most temperatures reaching the middle to upper 80s Fahrenheit,” Babinski said.

The urban areas along the Interstate 95 corridor could hit or exceed 90 F.
