Police: Nesquehoning man faces drug charges

A Nesquehoning man is in Carbon County prison facing three drug charges after police said they found suspected heroin in his residence on Friday morning.

Michael Atkinson, 29, is charged with possession with intent to deliver a controlled substance, unlawful possession of a controlled substance and possession of drug paraphernalia.

According to an affidavit of probable cause filed by officer Timothy Wuttke, police received a complaint that narcotics were being sold from the East Columbus Avenue residence where Atkinson resides.

Atkinson, Wuttke wrote, was meeting with people outside the home, and multiple people picked him up, drove around the block and dropped him off again.

Officers from Nesquehoning and Lansford police departments served a search warrant Friday at 8:36 a.m. and detained three people, one of which was Atkinson.

During the search, officers found what they suspected to be five bundles of heroin, 167 empty wax packets, several needles and a spoon with white residue on it, all of which was found in Atkinson’s room.

An additional pink wax packet with powder in it was found in a separate room.

Atkinson told police the substance was heroin and the items found were his, but that he only had everything for personal use.

“Due to the hazards heroin poses to law enforcement officers, we did not take the bundles apart to count the bags,” Wuttke wrote.

Bail was set at $50,000 cash and a preliminary hearing is scheduled for 2 p.m. on July 17 in front of Magisterial District Judge Casimir Kosciolek of Lansford.

It is the second set of charges for Atkinson this week.

On Wednesday, Jim Thorpe Borough Police charged him with use/possession of drug paraphernalia and disorderly conduct.
