PMW tops Pleasant Vy.

One week after the Pleasant Valley girls basketball team suffered a close loss to Pocono Mountain West, they tried to avenge the defeat Wednesday night.

It was to no avail though, as Pocono Mountain West easily rolled to a 49-33 win over the Bears in the final regular-season game for the 2018-19 campaign.

“We reviewed film,” Pocono Mountain West head coach Stacy Perryman said. “We looked at areas of concern and areas that we felt could be open, that we could sneak in and be the aggressors.

“Our girls read it well tonight, and they attacked from the very beginning, which I think set the tone of the game.”

Ai Owens was the bright spot in the Panther offense, scoring 16 points on the night. Cameron Caffrey led the Bears with 15 points.

“Ai has that potential,” Perryman said. “In the beginning of the season, she lacked that confidence and had a lot of insecurities. The girls trust her, and I think that kind of upped her game, and she was able to perform with that confidence tonight.”

The Panthers began the game on a 20-5 run and led 23-8 at halftime. The lead stabilized in the third and fourth quarters between the two Eastern Pennsylvania Conference teams.

While the Panthers had their game going Wednesday night, the Bears struggled from the start. Pleasant Valley’s offense showed little spark until late in the contest.

Bears head coach Nadia Gauronsky said Pocono Mountain West came prepared to play after a close contest a few short days before.

“They just came out and played aggressively and hard on offense and defense,” Gauronsky said. “To their credit, they played well. We got behind very early, tried to stop it and they played poised. We played panicky and that’s just what happened.”

Pleasant Valley made some adjustments before the rematch against Pocono Mountain West.

“We moved some personnel around, trying to create a different look for ourselves,” Gauronsky said. “That didn’t really work out and then we were forced to play on our heels.

“It just wasn’t our night. We have to move forward. We have to take control of districts and move past this and get a better mindset.”

Pocono Mountain West won the Mountain Division of the EPC with the victory.
