Pleasant Valley hires more teachers

Pleasant Valley continues to hire teachers for 2018-19 school year.

At the most recent school board meeting the Pleasant Valley directors approved the hiring of another three teachers for the current school year.

Kristine Delmas was hired as a new special education teacher. Delmas is certified in elementary education K-6 and special education.

Seana Parcha was hired to fill a third-grade teaching position at Pleasant Valley Elementary School. Parcha has a Bachelor of Science in elementary education and is certified in Pre-K to fourth grade.

Matthew Durich was hired to teach eighth grade science at Pleasant Valley Middle School. Durich is certified in grades 4 to 8 in all subjects and holds a certificate for 7 and 8 science.

Start dates were not listed for the new hires.

The directors also approved the hiring of Alex Wunder as interim head coach of the high school boy’s varsity soccer team. Matt Gould and Chris Lusto were approved as varsity assistant coaches.

Lusto was approved unanimously by the board. Director Laura Jecker voted no on both Wunder and Gould.

When asked why she did not agree with the hires, Jecker said, “Upon consideration of their appointment I had reservations about approving them at this time.”

Board directors Russell Gould and Daniel Wunder abstained from the vote.

“I believe that this isn’t about the coaches as much as it is about these kids,” high school Principal Matthew Triolo said. “If we thought Mr. Pachuta’s passing was hard on staff, imagine what these kids have been through. They are responding to these guys and bonding. It’s about trust.”

Varsity soccer head coach Chris Pachuta passed away on Aug. 27.

The naming of the new fitness center was also discussed. The fitness center will be named in memory of Pleasant Valley alumni Chris Hixon. Hixon was the Athletic Director at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida.

Hixon was among the 17 students and teachers who died in a mass shooting in February.

The estimated charges for the Colonial Intermediate Unit 20 for Special Education services was approved at a cost of $1,959,456. The final contract cost to be reconciled by August 2019.

Payment in the amount of $10,340 was approved for Hillmann Consulting for microbial and clearance Inspections and additional services.
