Palmerton club learns about theatrical makeup

The Palmerton Concourse Club learned about theatrical makeup techniques during its first meeting of the current season earlier this month.

More than 50 local women attended.

The evening’s program featured the Palmerton Area High School Drama Club, whose members demonstrated techniques for applying theatrical makeup just in time for Halloween.

Matt Yurkunas, a high school junior, described the work being demonstrated by sophomores Hannah O’Neil and Frankie Webb as they worked to turn club President Carol Curcio into Frankenstein’s bride, Patricia Kern into a scarecrow, and Ann Hayes into a clown.

Yurkunas described several techniques for working with Ben Nye theatrical makeup, including using foam sponges and long-bristled brushes for applying base coats and short-bristled brushes for applying detail features.

Resa Hall, the drama club’s musical director, then told the group about the club’s upcoming events, including the production of “A Christmas Story” scheduled for Dec. 6 and 7.

The Palmerton Concourse Club, founded in 1915, is a community group of over 100 local women who conduct a variety of events and fundraisers throughout the year.

They direct the group’s income in support of other community groups.
