Palmer students combine fun, fundraising, fitness

It took a minute, but an out-of-breath Kyla Trumbre had little trouble describing her physical condition following Thursday’s Bomber Fun Run in the Palmerton Borough park.

“I’m really tired,” the S.S. Palmer Elementary second-grader said.

Trumbre was far from the only one exhausted after the lap around the park, one of the signature parts of the event hosted by the S.S. Palmer/Parkside parent-teacher organization.

Every K-6 student in the two schools got a chance to run in the park as well as make their way through a blow-up bounce house.

During the run, students also had to deal with obstacles such as throwing balls through a hoop before they could advance.

“Students are asked to get sponsors for their run and I think it’s something they really enjoy, the challenge of trying to raise the most money,” said Tiffany Lakatosh, Bomber Fun Run chairwoman.

The annual event is one of the PTO’s largest fundraisers. Last year, the event raised over $10,000.

“It helps fund a lot of our field trips, assemblies, Christmas gifts and other things we do for the students,” Lakatosh said.

When asked her favorite part of the day, Trumbre said trying to get the balls through the hoop was a fun challenge.

“I also liked trying to get through the bounce house,” she said.

Raising funds wasn’t the only goal of the day. One of the key messages, Lakatosh said, was staying active.

“I think the students enjoyed the opportunity to run through the park,” she said. “Getting exercise every day is something so crucial.”

Students had a little incentive as they tried to pick up sponsors for the race. Leading fundraisers might get an opportunity to throw a pie in the face of their teacher.

“If we reach certain amounts, that had traditionally been part of the deal with this event,” Lakatosh said.

The pie-throwing event will likely take place before the Christmas break.
