New York state driver faces multiple charges

A New York state driver has been charged with multiple counts following hit-and-run crashes.

Pocono Mountain Regional police said the incidents occurred along Route 196 near Echo Lake Road, in Tobyhanna, Coolbaugh Township, Monroe County, at 1:18 p.m. on Feb. 14.

According to police, Wilfredo F. Roman, 45, of New York City, was operating an Infiniti sedan south on 196 when his vehicle crossed the center line and struck a northbound vehicle causing disabling damages to that vehicle and injuring the driver, who was transported to a hospital for treatment. Roman continued south without stopping to render aid, and in the area of Wildflower Drive, his vehicle struck a second vehicle. He continued south after impact without stopping to render aid.

Roman then lost control of his vehicle and struck a tree along the berm. People who witnessed the first and third crashes identified Roman as the driver and sole occupant of the Infiniti. After striking the tree, Roman fled his vehicle, but was later located south near the intersection of Route 196 and Kings Way by witnesses to the crashes. A check revealed Roman did not have a valid driver’s license.

Police said Roman had a strong odor of marijuana and alcohol on his breath. He was arrested and later arraigned and committed to the county prison in Snydersville in lieu of $25,000 straight cash bail. Police said he is also awaiting sentencing in New York for unrelated charges.

Roman has been charged with accidents involving death or personal injury, accidents involving death or personal injury while not properly licensed, driving under the influence of alcohol or controlled substance, accidents involving damage to attended vehicle, possession of a small amount of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia, and multiple summary motor vehicle offenses.
