Pleasant Valley graduate and current Kutztown University cornerback Nyiem Nevarez was named the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Eastern Division Special Teams Athlete of the Week after his performance against Shippensburg on Oct. 20.

Trailing 21-14 with Shippensburg looking for more points before the half, Nevarez blocked a Red Raider field goal attempt, his second straight game with a blocked kick, which Ahkee Cox-Cowan then scooped up for a 74-yard touchdown. The redshirt junior also returned a kick for 15 yards and an interception for 14 yards, finishing with five combined tackles on defense and special teams.

This season, the Effort native has recorded 33 tackles (20 solo) and returned six kickoffs for 127 yards, an average of 21.2 per return.

Nevarez is the second PV grad at Kutztown to earn the honor this year, as punter Dean Krcic won the award after a Sept. 15 win against Gannon.
