Nesquehoning VFW auxiliary meets

The regular monthly meeting of the auxiliary to Nesquehoning Memorial VFW Post 8008 was held on Aug. 10 at the Post home with President Christa Kattner presiding.

One application for membership was received and approved.

A joint District 20 meeting was held at Post 3448 on Aug. 10. Department President Charlotte Lopes made her official visit to the District Auxiliary at the meeting. General Orders 1 were read and filed for action. Information on the Scotland School Alumni Golf tournament was also read, along with resignation letters of two officers.

Under Veterans and Family Support, 86 cards were sent, and two books of stamps. September is suicide prevention month. Every day, 22 veterans take their lives.

Under Community Service, a bloodmobile was held at the post on Aug. 22. Members present reported a total of 171 volunteer hours served in various community services. National Home life memberships are available for $35; the price will increase to $50 on Jan. 1, 2019.

Buddy Poppy days at Redner’s for Veterans Day will be Nov. 2-4. Dedication of the playground at the Panther Valley Elementary School was Aug. 23.

The theme for the Voice of Democracy, open to students from grades nine to 12, is “Why My Vote Matters.” Patriot’s Pen theme, open to grades six through eight, is “Why I Honor the American Flag.” Deadline for these programs in Oct. 31.

Patriotic Art program deadline is April 15, 2019. Information will be available at the local schools.

Dues are now due and letters will be sent to annual members.

The Auxiliary is participating in the Boscov’s “Friends Helping Friends” Program. The shopping day for the discount coupons is Oct. 16; see any active member for the pass. Gift cards for Tommy’s in Jim Thorpe are also available from active members; returns are due at the Sept. 14 meeting.

The Post and Auxiliary will be hosting the Sept. 16 District Meeting, beginning at 2 p.m.

Cheri Santore was moved from junior vice president to senior vice president. Maureen Hirochek was elected to fill the junior vice president post. Corrine Kattner accepted two-year trustee and Missy Hascher accepted the post of one-year trustee.

The next regular meeting will be 6:30 p.m. Sept. 14 at the Post home.
