Nesquehoning police recently filed alcohol or drug related charges against two people.

• Dennis Matthew Miller, 38, of Nesquehoning was charged with possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia. On Aug. 18, police were called to the apartment above Miller’s for a complaint of a weird smell. Police then contact Miller and while speaking to him, Miller admitted to smoking marijuana two hours earlier. Police saw drug paraphernalia in Miller’s apartment.

• John Palmer Cleland Jr., 52, of Nesquehoning was charged with two counts driving under the influence of a controlled substance after overdosing in his vehicle. On July 7, police were called to Cleland’s residence by Cleland’s girlfriend. Cleland was having trouble breathing and his eyes were red and glassy. He told police that he used a gram of cocaine. Methamphetamine was also found in his system following a blood draw.

• Victor E. Canales, 60, of Lansford was charged with two counts driving under the influence of a controlled substance and one count each careless driving, failing to keep right and driving at safe speed. According to police, on Jan. 4, police were investigating a crash on Route 209 in the area of the wash shanty when an SUV, driven by Canales was traveling down the hill. The vehicle crossed the southbound lane of traffic and struck the mirror of the patrol vehicle as it attempted to correct. After police made contact with the driver, the officer learned Canales was showing signs of drug use. When asked, Canales showed police his medical marijuana card and admitted to smoking marijuana. A blood test showed that there were multiple drugs in Canales’ system.

Citations

Borough police also issued citations for various offenses.

• Robert Louise Adams Jr. of Southern Pines, North Carolina, was cited for not having a license when trying to sell cleaning products door to door.

• Melwin Mercado of Camden, New Jersey, was cited for operating a vehicle that exceeded the allowable width along Route 93; as well as for not stopping at the posted truck pull off on the top of Route 93 to gear down.

• Issued one citation for allowing their grass to grow over 6 inches high.
