Nesquehoning council clarifies burning ordinance

Nesquehoning wants to clarify its burning ordinance now that fall is here.

During borough council’s meeting on Wednesday, John McArdle, Nesquehoning emergency management coordinator, said that he has fielded a number of questions about what can be burned and when.

Under the ordinance, after Labor Day, people are allowed to burn from 5 to 10 p.m. Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays, he said, adding that yard waste, leaves and branches are not permitted to be burned at all.

McArdle clarified that the borough allows firepits with screens and chimineas.

For the complete ordinance, which includes types of permitted fires, what can and cannot be burned and regulations on burning, visit the borough website at www.nesquehoning.org/?q=ordinances and click on the “2018-1 burning ordinance” file.

In other fire matters, McArdle, who also serves as one of three borough fire chiefs, reminded the public that Fire Prevention Week is Oct. 7-13 and this week is the perfect time to schedule having their heating systems cleaned in preparation of winter, as well as changing the batteries in smoke and carbon monoxide detectors.

A letter will also be sent out to Lake Hauto Club to remind officials that it is time to clean the development’s dry fire hydrants.
