TAMAQUA – The Jim Thorpe boys and the Lehighton girls both came up big on Day 2 of the Schuylkill Track League championships.

Fittingly and dramatically, the titles weren’t decided until the final two events.

The Jim Thorpe boys won their second straight league crown, fending off a strong challenge from second place Tamaqua to post a 136.6-132 victory.

Meanwhile, the Lehighton girls were battling Blue Mountain all afternoon long before the Eagles late spurt as dusk settled upon the Tamaqua Area Stadium complex allowed them to pull out a 137-116.33 victory.

Veteran Lehighton track coach Jim Blakeslee wasn’t hiding behind a façade of hope, as he knew his feisty ladies were about to get passed over the final two events — both sprints, which is the Achilles Heel for the Indians.

There was excitement before the day’s first event had even finished as Tamaqua was trying to jockey the troops, needing some of its participants to have their personal bests. The Blue Raiders were in fifth place after Tuesday’s opening events.

Blue Mountain set the tone Tuesday, but before the sun splashed day was history Wednesday, Jim Thorpe came storming from being down 23 points to capture the title.

“What a great day. What a great day ... what more can I say,” said Jim Thorpe coach Frank Miller, who guided his team to a second straight league championship. “These kids just compete. I can’t be more proud. When you look how close it was between Tamaqua and us.”

As much as the speed boys can make tracks for the Olympians, Miller pointed to the field events where his team accumulated second and third places for key points.

“AJ Bailor had a huge (pr) second place in the discus, and coupled with Billy Munson’s two first-place wins in the discus and shot put, they earned us huge points,” Miller said.

“It was a workout,” said an out-of-breath Munson, who also picked up a third place in the javelin. “I wasn’t surprised the way I performed, I came out and did what I needed to do.”

Munson’s throw of 49-feet in the shot put outdistanced Tamaqua’s Matt Amodea, while Bailor was adding valuable points with his third place. Munson and Bailor finished 1-2 in the discus to tack on 18 more points.

Tamaqua had two wins in the field events. Barron Stauffenberg was first in the triple jump at 42-9, while teammate Khalid Holland was first in the pole vault at 14-2. Teammate Pierce Demetriades finished second in the pole vault.

“Our boys were awesome,” said Tamaqua coach Tom Kanger. “Our guys really stepped up after being behind after the first day to Blue Mountain by 36 points … we got a lot of personal bests. It was amazing the way our boys came back.”

Jim Thorpe’s balance started to pay off as the day wore on.

It started when Samuel Hydro nipped North Schuylkill’s Luke Halko in the 800. Hydro hit the tape at 1:58.58, just a nudge ahead of Halko’s 1:58.75.

Tamaqua kept pace, however, as its 400 relay team of Jake Barren, Darian Stianche, John Franko and Matt Kistler zoomed to the finish line for a first-place finish in a time of 44.67. Thorpe finished third and Marian fifth.

Stianche’s win in the 400 meter dash in a time of 51.07 was his personal best, outdueling Thorpe’s Hydro (51.55), while Marian’s Ean Chelak had a fourth place finish.

The Olympians also got a huge day from Jarrin Geisinger, who picked up a pair of firsts.

In the 100 meters, Geisinger nipped Lehighton’s Tahmir Spencer, and also held off Tamaqua’s Kistler.

“I knew both of those guys could win it,” said Geisinger who hit the tape in a time of 10.97. “It was a great race I’m just so glad that I was able to get the win.”

Earlier in the day, Geisinger blazed to a win in the 200 meter dash with a time of 22.8, while Kistler was second.

Tamaqua’s Nicholas DiMarco battled Mahanoy Area’s Chase Mazalusky in the 110 meter hurdles, as Mazalusky won with a time of 15.47.

Meanwhile, in girls action, Lehighton tried to do its best to stay the course after building a lead on Day 1.

“When it came down to the final two events, I kind of knew we weren’t going to stay on top,” said Blakeslee. “Blue Mountain’s strong point is their sprinters, and we just didn’t have that type of runner to hang in there with them. But overall, I thought our kids were outstanding.”

The medals were hung in gold for Emily Miller (javelin), Brittany Bartasavage (100 hurdles) and the sensational Kia Slaw (triple jump). Meanwhile Blue Mountain dashed its way to the winners circle starting with the 400 relay team, where Tamaqua finished second.

The Eagles picked up another key win in the 1600 relay event, where Tamaqua added another second-place finish. And when the Eagles flew to a win in the 200 meter dash on the wings of superb athlete Kylie Kutz, the outlook started to look bleak for Lehighton.

“Our strength was the sprints and the running events,” said Blue Mountain coach Paige Lurwick. “We didn’t panic when (Lehighton) was leading. So we kept our composure and just built on the momentum. Lehighton has some really great kids; I admire their team.”

Blue Mountain got a big boost in the shot put from Elsie Wanamaker when she held off Tamaqua’s Emily Titus with a 33-4 1/4 throw, with Titus heaving it 33-1, Lehighton’s Isabelle Mackes was third with a toss of 33-0.

Oliva Haas captured first place for Blue Mountain in the 800 dash, followed by Thorpe’s Lydia Wallace and Tamaqua’s Brianna Dumond. Haas also won the 400 meters ahead of Tamaqua’s France Kabana.

Weatherly’s Emily Zoscin (12.75) finished second in the 100 meter dash. Kutz was the winner with a time of 12.57. Zoscin (27.26) was third in the 200 meters, which was also won by Kutz.
