Mountaineers defeat Pleasant Valley

STROUDSBURG — If you were looking for scoring, Stroudsburg was the place to find it Friday night as the Mountaineers beat Pleasant Valley, 48-33.

It was another strong offensive performance by the Mountaineers, who will be the No. 2 seed in next week’s District 11 Class 6A playoffs.

“There are still a lot of things we have to work on. There’s always things you have to work on,” said Stroudsburg coach Jim Miller. “But I’m happy with how our offense is playing heading into the playoffs.”

Pleasant Valley actually struck first, using some razzle-dazzle as Brent Beck took a handoff and then tossed the ball back to quarterback Aidan McHugh, who delivered an 81-yard touchdown pass to Michael Brown.

The Mountaineers alternated runs from Trevor Hines and Kyeer Grant as they went 76 yards to take a 7-6 lead with 5:44 left in the first quarter.

Stroudsburg then added to its lead on its next possession when quarterback Sherwin Stewart rolled out to his right and tossed a perfect 33-yard TD pass to Benny Pembleton. David Kutteroff added the extra point giving Stroudsburg a 14-6 lead with 2:22 left in the first quarter.

Pleasant Valley then took over on their own 31 yard line as their offense took the field.

The Bears answered right back as McHugh found Brown for 59 yards taking the ball down to the 5-yard line. Following a holding penalty, McHugh found Brown again in the end zone for a 17-yard touchdown that cut the Mountaineer lead to 14-12 with 1:24 left in the first quarter.

After a couple of stalled drives, Stroudsburg took control late in the second quarter, using an eight-yard run from Sherwin Stewart and a 65-yard interception return for a score from Trevor Hines to increase its lead to 28-12 at halftime.

As if things couldn’t get worse for the Bears, they fumbled the opening kickoff handing it right back to Stroudsburg.

Taking over at the 31, quarterback Sherwin Stewart threw a 25 yard pass to Hines and then ran for four yards for another Mountaineer touchdown.

After another Pleasant Valley turnover, Stewart hooked up with Hines again as they combined for a 23-yard touchdown and a commanding 41-12 lead.

The Bears didn’t quit, however, as they got three touchdown passes from McHugh down the stretch with Brown, Beck and Samir Hoxha catching the TDs.

“Pleasant Valley kept throwing and I mean we didn’t take offense to it,” said Miller. “It’s the last game of the season and they kept swinging.”

NOT FOR NOTHING ... Despite throwing two interceptions, McHugh had an incredible passing performance as he threw for 445 yards and four touchdowns.

DUAL THREAT ... Mountaineers quarterback Sherwin Stewart ran the ball well Friday for 76 yards but also showed off his arm a few times, including beautiful 50 yard pass.
